The package includes the basic knives you’ll need in your home as well as a sharpener and a storage block.
As expected, the edges are sharp and they retain this sharpness for long. Unfortunately, the price is too much for the set, especially when you put the chipping problem into consideration.
Cooking is a stressful activity, especially for someone who doesn’t do it regularly. The good news is that having the perfect cookware and appliances will make cooking less stressful and more interesting for you.
One of the most important cookware you will ever need is a knife. There are different categories and subcategories of knives out there but you can’t have them all.
With a good set of 6 knives, you can work your magic in the kitchen without stress. The Shun Classic 6-piece Slim Knife Block Set is an ideal option for anyone who is looking for versatility without buying separate pieces.
Our Shun Classic 6-piece Slim Knife Block Set review is based on our experience with this beautiful product in the Shun Classic collection.

Shun Classic 6-piece Slim Knife Block Set Features
Damascus knives are known for their beautiful rough designs. The traditional Damascus blade has over 300 layers. The Shun Classic 6-piece Slim Knife Block Set doesn’t have 300 layers.
It has just 34 layers but the layers are just enough to provide the flowery roughness you see on the blades. This pattern of design is called Damascus-clad.
It takes a lot of effort and each layer is added alternatively with hot or cold powered steel. The layers are used to sandwich the super steel VG-MAX core of the knife.
It is no doubt a beautiful sight. It is important to note that beauty and elegance aren’t the only benefits of Damascus cladding.
The design makes the knife more efficient, especially when it’s time to slice juicy or sticky foods.
No meat, fish or any other food substance will get stuck on the blade when you pull it out.
5 Knives and One Shear Per Set
There are five knives and one shear in the set. The 3.5-inch paring knife for peeling your fruits and above-ground vegetables, a 7-inch Santoku knife for cutting, dicing, slicing, and chopping.
The set also has an 8-inch chef’s knife and we know how important a chef’s knife is in every cutlery set.
The kitchen shear in the set ensures that you don’t move your scissors out of your sewing set whenever you want to cut herbs or open a sachet in the kitchen.
The knife comes with a solid block as most knife sets do. Even if there are just six pieces in the set, the block has room for 8 knives.
This is almost like a marketing strategy by Shun to subconsciously trick people into buying more knives to fill the extra space.
It’s a clever strategy but most buyers have expressed disappointment in this feature. Let’s not forget to mention the 8-inches steel knife sharpener that comes with the set.
So, no more need for purchasing a whetstone just to keep your knife good as new.

Rockwell Hardness of 61 and 16° Double Bevel Edge
As stated above, the knife is made of one of the super Japanese steel, VG-MAX. This steel is rich in carbon, chromium, cobalt, and other amazing compounds.
This is why it’s not a surprise that most high-end knives that are made in Japan are created using VG-MAX steel. The steel is molded into shape with extreme heat and ice hardening.
Combined with all the elements inside, It’s not a surprise that the Rockwell hardness score of the Shun Classic 6-piece Slim Knife Block Set is 61. This is the average score for kitchen knives.
The knives are all hand sharpened to a double bevel of 16° making them great for multiple purposes.
Keep in mind that double bevel edges have many advantages but they will not give you the same precision as single bevel blades.
The good news is that most standard kitchen knives have double bevel edges and you don’t need to learn any new skill to use them.
The Shun Classic 6-piece Slim Knife Block Set might be expensive to purchase but maintaining it over time doesn’t require any special attention or extra spending.
The handle is made of a resin composite popularly known as pakkawood. This handle doesn’t absorb water and it is also resistant to wear and tear.
Since the steel used for the blade is stain resistant and the handle is water-resistant, you can see why the set is made up of low maintenance knives.
You can wash with soap and keep them in the block after each use. If you notice that the tip gets chipped after extended use, you can return it and request a replacement thanks to the limited lifetime warranty.
