Bottom Line

Our Dalstrong Slicing Carving Knife review is unbiased. It shows that even if the Dalstrong Slicing Knife is beautiful and has a lot of great features like the ergonomic pakkawood handle, satin finish, and full tang construction, the blade isn’t as sharp as advertised.

You may have to sharpen it before every use. This can be frustrating and not everyone will have the time to use a whetstone whenever they want to cook. It is a high-end knife that costs between $70 to $80 on Amazon so you can understand why the inability to retain sharpness is discouraging.

Features of Dalstrong Slicing Carving Knife

12 Inches Long Blade

The Dalstrong Slicing Carving Knife is one of the longest in its category. It is made of ThyssenKrupp German steel which is rich in carbon. Thanks to the length, there is hardly any food that would be too large or too wide for the knife to cut straight through.

The entire blade is a single piece of steel and its pretty rust-resistant for high-carbon steel. This also means that it is easy to clean after each use. Make sure you wash it and keep it dry after each use. High-carbon steel is more prone to rust when it is not kept clean and dry all the time.

It is also important to note that the blade is precision forged. Percussion forged knives are better than stamped knives. The blade is hand-sharpened to about 14° to 16° on both sides providing maximum resilience.

Thick Finger Protective Bolster

The knife has a protective tapered bolster which is a thick junction between the handle and the blade. This protective bolster does more than protect your fingers while you’re slicing, it also helps make the blade well balanced.

As you know, a 12 inches long knife is on the heavy side and the Dalstrong Slicing Carving Knife weighs about 8.3 ounces. So, if it didn’t have a solid tapered bolster, it would not be properly balanced and you’ll have difficulty when you’re using it.

It is a full tang blade that runs from the sharp edge to the end of the handle. The thick tang, wooden handle and bolsters also contribute to the weight of the knife thus providing a counterbalance. In our opinion, it is one of the most balanced knives by Dalstrong.

durable design

Durable Design

Thanks to the full tang blade, triple riveted, and high-quality carbon steel, the knife is durable. Full tang knives are usually more durable than half tang knives. Another thing that contributes to the durability of the knife is the premium quality laminated pakkawood handle.

All the Dalstrong knives in this series have the same laminated pakkawood handle which is imported from Spain. Pakkawood handles aren’t just beautiful for nothing; they are strong, durable, and blend in perfectly with this quality knife.

The triple-rivet is also another feature that secures the knife in place making it more durable. The handle is ergonomically designed and it has a perfect spine ensuring a comfortable pinch grip.

Chromium and High Carbon Mix

There are different types of steel used for making knives. Some are rich in high-carbon while others are rich in chromium. The Dalstrong Slicing Carving Knife has a little of both for good reason. Chromium is added to stainless steel to prevent corrosion andmake it stain resistance.

However, the drawback is that chromium-rich steel doesn’t retain sharpness like high-carbon steel. High-carbon steel retains sharpness but it is more prone to rust than chromium rich steel.

By adding chromium to the carbon-rich steel, Dalstrong is sharp out of the box and rust-resistant. However, the edges still don’t retain sharpness as much as they should. You may need to sharpen the knife with a whetstone regularly.

Versatility

One of the best features of the Dalstrong Slicing Carving Knife is its versatility. The knife can be used to cut, slice, and carve almost every food you can think of.

The length makes it perfect for high-performance cooking by professionals but you don’t need to be a chef in a fancy restaurant to own a fancy knife. The knife also comes with the famous Dalstrong PerfectFit sheath.

The PerfectFit sheath is a beautiful protective gear that you can use to cover the knife when you’re not using it. When you want to move around with the knife. The quality of the sheath also promotes the lifespan of the knife.

Dalstrong Slicing Carving Knife Review The Verdict

If there is anything obvious from our Dalstrong Slicing Carving Knife review, it’s that it’s difficult to find a knife that is 100% perfect at a reasonable price.

However, the Dalstrong Slicing Carving Knife is among the good ones. It is a long, durable, and versatile kitchen knife that might be just what you need in the kitchen.

Despite all the useful features, the edges of this Dalstrong Knife get dull too often for a knife in its price range. There is also the problem of weight. It might take a little practice to get used to the weight.
